What is a University policy?

A University policy is a statement of principles guiding the actions of MSU Denver students, employees, and community members. University policies and procedures align University operations with MSU Denver’s mission, strategic plan, and core values, along with external rules and requirements, including federal and state laws, regional accreditation criteria, and best practices in higher education.

Where can I find policies?

The University Policy Library provides convenient access to University-wide policies and procedures. MSU Denver students, employees, and community members should familiarize themselves with all applicable University policies and procedures.

Individual departments may maintain additional standards and guidelines applying only to that unit, as long as the standards and guidelines are not in conflict with University policies. Such standards and guidelines do not override University policies and are often available on department websites.

Who approves University policies?

The Trustees of MSU Denver are authorized via State law to enact rules and regulations to govern and operate the University. The Trustees are responsible for approving policies related to governance of the University. The Trustees have delegated authority to the President of MSU Denver to approve operational policies and procedures. (See the University Policy on Administrative Policy Enactment.)

What resources are available to policy sponsors and responsible offices developing policy?

Policy sponsors and responsible offices have access to policy templates, writing guides, and writing and research support from the policy office.

External resources, including federal and state laws, regional accreditation criteria, and federal and state education policies are also available on the policy website.

Is there a process to expedite the policy decision-making process in case of an emergency?

Yes, the President of MSU Denver is authorized to approve interim University policies when the standard time for review and approval is insufficient to address legal requirements or a significant institutional risk.

Once approved, interim policies are active for one year and must complete the standard policy review and approval process.

The President may also approve technical changes to policies to reflect current legal requirements and University branding and standards.

How will I know if a policy or procedure changes?

New and revised policies are announced in the employee newsletter, the EarlyBird, and on the policy website.

Where do I call if I have a question on a policy?

Contacts for individual policies are listed in the Roles and Responsibilities section of each policy.
