The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed for candidates with a bachelor's degree in a field other than education who wish to obtain a master's degree and become a licensed teacher in the areas of either Elementary Education or Special Education. Both areas provide a comprehensive background in education with all of the required coursework and clinical experience for licensure in the state of Colorado.
The MAT program prepares candidates for successful careers in education through high quality and accessible education. The goal of the MAT programs is to prepare teachers to make effective decisions in diverse classrooms. To accomplish this goal, emphasis is placed on producing master teachers who are self-reflective, life-long learners, and who have an understanding of child development, content, and pedagogy.
MAT licensure candidates must be able to use theory, research, classroom experience, and professional judgment to lead others in collaborative planning, implementation, and evaluation of effective instruction for students.
We offer two concentrations of the MAT Program:
The Autism and Significant Support Needs Certificate Program is designed for persons holding a current license in special education, or equivalent. The goal of the certificate program is to increase the number of well trained personnel in the areas of autism and significant support needs by providing a culturally responsive curriculum designed to meet the needs of school professionals teaching in these areas.
